Gambino is back – what a way to return.
Gambino was a very busy man last night, but that didn’t stop him from single-handedly pulling off one of the best reintroductions to music ever. Last night, Donald Glover had the pleasure of hosting NBC’s Saturday Night Live as well as performing under his stage name Childish Gambino. In the midst of hosting, he mysteriously dropped off a brand new video for his new song titled “This is America” and what a visual it was.
The video is a huge jab at America giving us comical tease and direct reflections of our current society every step of the way. Directed by Hiro Murai, the visual is a mesh of political chaos that perfectly describes America and how we’re dealing with our social climate.
The entire video is filmed inside of a huge warehouse and starts off eerily strange as Gambino is being his carefree self dancing around before suddenly executing a man. The rest of the video follows this same pattern from fun to violence as he jokingly dances around the “problems” until he pulls out an assault rifle killing an entire gospel choir. The highlight of his video is definitely his hilarious dance moves, but the fun soon ends as we see him running away from a mob of people at the end.
The political message is clear in the video and couldn’t have arrived at a better time. Before the video dropped last night he also performed another new track called “Saturday” live on SNL.
