Are We Ready for a new Black Star album?

Just yesterday, the internet was aflutter with news of a new album executive produced by Madlib. Yes, you read that correctly! Critically acclaimed duo, Talib Kweli and Yasiin Bey (fka Mos Def), set to come back on the scene. Black Star released their only album 20 years ago in 1998. From there, both pursued their solo careers and in 2016, Bey announced his retirement from music. It was a bittersweet moment but he promised not to leave completely. Now in 2018 at a concert, Bey announced that the group is back this year with Madlib at the helm for production. For hip hop purists and lovers of nostalgia, this moment seemed improbable. In the past, there was only two new singles from the group called  “Fix Up” and “You Already Knew” but that was in 2011 and then silence again.

“New Black Star with Madlib, Talib Kweli, Yasiin, coming soon! All Madlib, all day. 2018, Madlib, Black Star. Madlib Black Star.” – Yasiin Bey

From that enthusiastic exclamation by Bey, the improbable becomes more probable. Black Star’s impact and influence run deep and in the ever evolving world of hip hop, it’s going to be a standout. For some, it may be too late to fulfill this wish but for most, we continue to wait patiently. Overall, it’s always Black Star forever.
