It’s a shit storm, isn’t it? Beaten down, broken & confused. One minute you’re on cloud 9 planning out the rest of your life or preparing to head off to school or doing whatever it is that makes your life worth while then boom— A car accident, a break-up, the loss of a job or a loved one occurs and life is like an hourglass. You have no idea which way is up or down and time seems to move slower than molasses ever could. In these times, I have found that Kanye West is the best source of inspiration.

Yeezy taught me, duh and Yeezy taught you

Now I know you’re reading this with confusion in your heart but hear me out. The rapper just turned 40 not too long ago and we have witnessed his life go through drastic changes over the last 15 years. Speech altering car accident, stripper girlfriend, break-up, award show beef, random reality tv appearances, movies, loss of his mom, married to a socialite, a clothing line, a baby, a shoe line, his wife’s robbery and another baby. I mean seriously I can’t remember a time in the last 15 years that Kanye had one year of nothing crazy happening in his life. But when I think about it, we all have crazy times in life. Outrageous days, dramatic months or even turbulent years where it seems like there’s no calm to the storm. Lo and behold! I learned something a few years ago that basically saved my life and kept me sane through the bull. Yeezy taught me, duh and Yeezy taught you too. I’ll break it down real simple for y’all real quick.

2004- College Dropout “Jesus Walks” :

God show me the way because the Devil’s tryin’ to break me down
The only thing that I pray is that my feet don’t fail me now
And I don’t think there is nothing I can do now to right my wrongs
I want to talk to God, but I’m afraid because we ain’t spoke in so long, so long

2005- Late Registration “Roses”

Let me see the X-rays, I ain’t no expert, I’m just hurt
Cousin Kim took off of work
Plus my Aunt Shirley, Aunt Beverly, Aunt Clay and Aunt Jean
So many Aunties we could have an Auntie Team
Feel like Amerie, it’s just “One Thing”
When they said that she made it you see they eyes gleam
I think we at a all-time high
To get there, we run, we fly, we drive
Cause with my family we know we know where home is
And so instead of sendin’ flowers, we the roses

2005- Late Registration “Spaceship”

If my manager insults me again I will be assaulting him
After I fuck the manager up then I’m gonna shorten the register up
Let’s go back, back to the Gap
Look at my check, wasn’t no scratch
So if I stole, wasn’t my fault
Yeah, I stole, never get caught

and then…

Takin’ my hits, writin’ my hits
Writin’ my rhymes, playin’ my mind
This fuckin’ job can’t help him
So I quit, y’all welcome
Y’all don’t know my struggle
Y’all can’t match my hustle
You can’t catch my hustle
You can’t fathom my love

2007- Graduation “Can’t Tell Me Nothing”

I had a dream I can buy my way to heaven
When I awoke, I spent that on a necklace.
I told God I’d be back in a second,
Man it’s so hard not to act reckless.
To whom much is given much is tested.
Get arrested, guess until, they get the message.
I feel the pressure, under more scrutiny,
and what I do? Act more stupidly.

2008- 808’s & Heartbreak “Love Lockdown”

I’m not loving you, the way I wanted to
What I had to do, had to run from you
I’m in love with you, but the vibe is wrong
And that haunted me, all the way home
So ya never know, never never know
Never know enough, til it’s over love
Til we lose control, system overload
Screaming no no no, no no
I’m not loving you, the way I wanted to
See I wanna move, but can’t escape from you
So I keep it low, keep a secret code
So everybody else don’t have to know

2010- My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy “Runaway”

Never was much of a romantic,
I could never take the intimacy.
And I know I did damage,
‘Cause the look in your eyes is killing me,
I guess you’ve got another advantage
‘Cause you could blame me for everything.
And I don’t know how I’m a manage,
If one day you just up and leave
Yeah, I always find somethin’ wrong
You been puttin’ up with my shit just way too long
I’m so gifted at findin’ what I don’t like the most
So I think it’s time for us to have a toast

2011- Watch The Throne “Welcome To The Jungle”

Why I pray so hard, this is crazy God
Just when I thought I had everything, I lost it all
So que sera, get a case of Syrah
Let it chase the pain, before it goes too far

2013- Yeezus “Blood On The Leaves”

To all my second string bitches, tryna get a baby
Trying to get a baby, now you talkin’ crazy
I don’t give a damn if you used to talk to Jay-Z
He ain’t with you, he with Beyoncé, you need to stop actin’ lazy
She Instagram herself like #BadBitchAlert
He Instagram his watch like #MadRichAlert
He only wanna see that ass in reverse
Two-thousand-dollar bag with no cash in your purse

2016- The Life Of Pablo “Waves”

Sun don’t shine in the shade
Bird can’t fly in a cage
Even when somebody go away
The feelings don’t really go away
That’s just the wave

It really doesn’t matter what’s going on in life. Seriously. Mad at your boo, hate your job, missing a loved one, feeling alone, need a pick me up or ready to turn up? There’s a plethora of tracks belonging to Kanye that will get you right. If these songs don’t speak to your heart the way they speak to mine, that’s cool too. Go through his discography and take your pick. Conquer the rest of your summer and remember: Yeezy taught you how to halfway smile through the bull.
