In 2010, Drake was coming strong with his singles from his debut album Thank Me Later. “Over,” “Find Your Love” and then “Shut It Down” leaked with The-Dream. The version that leaked didn’t have the extra verse at the end with Drake rapping, so when we received the album, much of us were surprised.
It turned out to be a real special track on the album, produced by Omen and Noah “40” Shebib. It would also be even more special because here we are seven years later and these two have not recorded since. Well, there’s a reason for that, as The Dream explains in an interview with Rob Markman of Genius.
“Shout out to Drake and what he’s doing… I remember when Drake was putting this record together. I was getting calls after calls after calls saying ‘do this record,” The Dream informed everyone. “I said ‘I’m going to do the record, I’m on tour, as soon as I get to a place, I’m going to do it. Drake called liked ‘yo, this how I want this to sound. I said ‘Drake, I’m gonna do this record, how I’m gonna do this record. ‘I’m gonna give it back to you, the same way you sent it with your verse. He was like ‘cool no problem.
The record ended up peaking 71 on the U.S. R&B charts and 125 on the U.S. Charts. Not too bad for a song that wasn’t released as a true single.
-As The-Dream continued, he goes on to say: “The record came out great…“I asked him to get on a record, and he never got on a record. Now, I’m only gonna ask you once. Especially if I’ve already done something for you…So that’s the end of the Drake and Dream era of a record.”
