After his nomination was announced earlier this year, it was expect that Tupac Shakur would enter into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on his first ballot year. And as expected, the 800 voters agreed that the Thug Angel will be inducted in the Class of 2017.
Along with Pearl Jam, Joan Boaz, Electric Light Orchestra, Pac will be posthumously honored for his contribution to music on April 7 at the official induction ceremony. He joins a growing liste of rap legends who have been recognized in the Hall, after Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Run D.M.C., Beastie Boys, Public Enemy and N.W.A.. Despite these predecessors, Pac is the first solo hip-hop act to be inducted, proving his legendary prowess.
While hip-hop artists have undoubtedly carried on a rock’n’roll attitude over the years, many rock purists still find it a disgrace that rappers have entered the hallowed halls of their legends. And to that, I can only think that Pac would find it hilarious that he’s still pissing off old white people.
The ceremony will take place on April 7 at the Barclays Center and will be broadcast on HBO sometime after that.
